Roger Penrose is awarded half of the prize "for the discovery that black hole formation is a robust prediction of the general theory of relativity". Andrea Ghez and Reinhard Genzel are awarded half of the prize "for the discovery of a supermassive compact object at the centre of our galaxy."

Questions about the Nobel prize in physics 2020 can be answered by two researchers at the Department of Astronomy, Jesper Sollerman and Magnus Axelsson, and by Bo Sundborg, Fysikum.
