"Using a filter system made specifically for the 1 meter Swedish Solar Telescope (SST) on La Palma, we will study the heating and powerful motions of the gas in the magnetically dominated solar chromosphere", says Göran Scharmer, professor at the Department of Astronomy and Royal Institute of Science. "We are in an excellent position. We have a telescope that can resolve details on the Sun better than any other telescope. This grant means we will be able to equip our telescope with a filter system that will give us an unprecedented precision when measuring the temperature and velocity of the gas in the chromosphere. It will also let us hire enough scientists, technicians and PhD students to realize this project. It is a grant that will be of enormous importance for our continued research in solar physics."
