One PhD position is available to work with Dr. Mattia Bulla ( on the modelling of thermonuclear supernovae and/or kilonovae from neutron star mergers. The project will focus on predicting spectra, lightcurves and polarization for various models using the radiative transfer code POSSIS (Bulla 2019, MNRAS, 489, 5037), with the ultimate goal of connecting models to observational data and better understanding the physics of these events. We have access to state-of-the-art models of both neutron star mergers and supernovae, and to exquisite observational data via the Zwicky Transient Facility project, a wide-field optical survey discovering several hundred supernovae every year and actively searching for kilonovae.
