Primary level (Bachelor) courses

Introduction to Astronomy AS5005, 7,5hp

Through this course you will study physical processes in the universe. You will get an overview of modern astronomy, and lay the foundation for more specialized studies in astrophysics.

Stellar Structure and Evolution AS5002, 7.5 hp

Stars play a critical role in astronomy and astrophysics. As astronomers, we use stars for everything from learning about galaxy formation to discovering exoplanets and understanding where the elements come from. In this course, we’ll learn all about the physics of stars, how they live, evolve, and die.

Cosmology AS5003, 7.5 hp

A course about the origin, evolution and structure of the universe.

Secondary level (Master) courses

Galaxies, AS7022, 7,5hp

The course addresses extragalactic astronomy with emphasis on understanding the astrophysical processes underlying how different types of galaxies may have very different properties. The course has a strong connection to research and contains two mandatory seminar sessions where the students discuss recent research literature.

Galaxy Formation and Evolution, AS8001, 7,5hp

Galaxies are the building blocks of the universe and their formation and evolution are part of its cosmological evolution. This course provides you with an introduction to the relevant theoretical background and observational results. You will encounter the most up-to-date results through reading a selection of current research papers.

Astrophysical Gas Dynamics, AS7002, 7,5hp

A large number of phenomena in astrophysics (and in our everyday world!) can be described in terms of gas dynamics. The course gives a basic introduction to the equations that govern the physics of gases/fluids and it will discuss astrophysically relevant phenomena such as shocks or fluid instabilities.

The Physics of the Interstellar Medium, AS7001,7,5hp

The course provides an overview of the structure and composition of the interstellar medium (ISM), and the physical processes acting therein. Course knowledge is used to gain insights to star-formation and galaxy evolution and explain observations of everything other than stars.

Astronomy, Degree Project, AS9003 (30 hp)

The degree project aims to give you deeper insights in and experience with scientific research. You will plan, execute and report an original research project. You will produce a scientific report and present your research results orally in a scientific seminar.
